Carbon Dioxide is a multipurpose gas, and can be used in several sectors. It is an alternative to acids, which traditionally are used to neutralise the level of alkaline waters. Its main advantages are safety and buffer effect.
The water produced in the desalination processes has such a high purity it causes corrosion problems, therefore making it unfit for consumption. CO2 contributes to the acidification of the desalted water and allows the dissolution of lime.
The process of softening by precipitation reduces the hardness of water and alkalinity, which would be used for cooling circuits or as pre-treatment in boilers. Then, through sedimentation or filtration precipitates are removed.
Struvite is a crystalline compound that appears spontaneously as incrustations that cause problems in specific WWTP locations, such as pipes that conduct sludge liquors, centrifuges, filters, presses and heat exchangers, among others.
