If the washed cellulose is subsequently bleached, CO2 also makes it possible to reduce the amount of chlorine-based agents used in the first stage (CDO).

Replacement of strong acids

CO2 can also be used after the cellulose refining process to fine-tune the pH level.

CO2 is generally used as a substitute for strong acids (H2SO4), SO2 and aluminium sulphate, as it allows for more precise control and prevents large fluctuations in pH levels. It also reduces the consumption of aluminium sulphate, which is added to control the pH, thereby partially replacing it.
