Oxygen for hospitalcare

It is the most important drug for hospital use.

Liquid and compressed medical oxygen

Oxygen is the most important molecule required for various respiratory therapies. It is classified as a medicinal product, and its quality is defined by the European Pharmacopoeia. The product is supplied in both liquid and gaseous forms.

What are the uses of oxygen in cylinders?

The primary use of medical oxygen is oxygen therapy. This involves the administration of a gas mixture with a high oxygen content, which is required in cases of respiratory failure, when oxygen levels in the arterial blood are low (hypoxaemia).

This condition can be caused by chronic diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic hypoxaemia, chronic bronchitis, severe pulmonary hypertension, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or neuromuscular diseases. Acute conditions, such as anaphylactic shock, severe haemorrhage or hypothermia, may also require oxygen therapy.

How is medical oxygen administered?

Depending on the condition being treated, the medical oxygen supply can be connected to:

  • A face mask or a nasal cannula, which are ideal for home therapy.
  • A tube inserted directly into the windpipe, following a tracheotomy.
  • An incubator or an oxygen tent, a common method for oxygenating newborns.
  • To a hyperbaric chamber, a dedicated room in which the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure.
  • To a CPAP device or continuous positive airway pressure ventilator.
