Nitrous oxide for conscious sedation
Low concentrations of nitrous oxide (up to 50%), while not altering the patient’s senses and reflexes, such as swallowing or coughing, significantly alleviate pain perception by acting on the central nervous system. For this reason, it is suitable for particularly sensitive patients or those suffering from anxiety, immediately making them calmer (it acts in a few minutes) and more cooperative.
Among the most common applications of nitrous oxide in the healthcare sector are dental procedures, especially with children. In hospitals, it is also used to relieve pain during labour, and in emergency rooms as a quick solution for reducing perceived pain and anxiety in cases of sutures and orthopaedic procedures.
